Not all heroes wear capes! Some wear sunscreen and goggles AND check that their pool is safe.
Tragically, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under five, particularly those aged one. But there is hope – and action we can all take to protect our little ones.
This summer, parents, caregivers, and homeowners are being urged to become pool safety ‘heroes’.
Why Pool Safety Matters
Drownings can happen in the blink of an eye. For children aged 1-5 years, pools present a dangerous risk, particularly when young children start walking and exploring.
They can slip away unnoticed at a party, or other children may unintentionally lead them to the water. A lapse in attention or an unsecured gate is all it takes for a tragedy to unfold.
But every parent or guardian can take simple, vital steps to prevent these incidents and be a hero.
How to Be a Pool Safety Hero
- Supervise, Supervise, Supervise: Never leave children alone near any pool, even for a moment. Always designate a responsible adult to supervise children in and around the water.
- Check Your Pool Fence: Ensure your pool fence is compliant against the latest Queensland pool safety standards. This includes verifying the legal height and making sure the fence is in good condition and free of gaps.
- Keep Climbables Away: Remove any furniture, pot plants, or other objects near the pool fence. Children can use these to climb over the fence, gaining access to the pool area.
- Secure the Gate: Your pool gate should be self-closing, self-latching, and always kept securely closed. Gates should open outwards, away from the pool area.
- CPR Signage: Always display a visible CPR sign near the pool, so you and others know what to do in case of an emergency.
- Check Spas and Inflatable Pools: Don’t forget about spas and inflatable pools. They must also meet the same safety standards as permanent pools to ensure they are safe for your little ones.
A compliant, secure pool fence can mean the difference between life and death for a young child. If you’re unsure whether your pool or fence meets current safety regulations, take a moment to check the guidelines in your area.
