In today’s fast-paced world, fatigue seems to be an unwelcome companion for many, with stress, diet, and lifestyle playing crucial roles in the epidemic of tiredness.
To shed light on why we often feel exhausted and how to reclaim our energy, we spoke to Adelaide-based naturopath and clinical nutritionist, Kelli Kieselbach.
Kelli, renowned for her passion in managing chronic pain and fatigue, shared that our modern lifestyle is a significant contributor to why many of us feel constantly drained.
“Our modern lifestyle has a big part to play, particularly in the Western world,” Kelli said. “We’re all very stressed, super busy, eating a diet that typically isn’t conducive to good energy levels.”
Fatigue can be more than just a result of a busy day; it’s sometimes indicative of deeper health issues.
“Feeling unrefreshed after a good night’s sleep or when tiredness is disproportionate to your activity level can be significant indicators that something isn’t right.”
Practical Steps to Improve Energy Levels
Diet and lifestyle adjustments can play pivotal roles in improving fatigue.
“We need to ensure we’re nourishing our bodies with the right nutrients—protein with each meal, plenty of fruits and vegetables—and manage stress through better sleep and reduced caffeine intake.”
“Most people can tolerate probably one cup [of coffee] but having it with food can lessen its impact on blood sugar and stress symptoms.”
When to Seek Professional and Personalised Help
If fatigue begins to intrude on everyday life, it could signal an underlying issue.
“It’s worthwhile having a check-up if your fatigue is abnormal for you or not resolving,” Kelli said.
“Your fatigue could be quite different from the next person’s. Personalised advice from a nutritionist or naturopath can provide targeted strategies to tackle your unique challenges.”
Early intervention with a healthcare professional can prevent more severe fatigue-related consequences.
“It’s important to recognise the difference between something that’s common and something that’s normal. It’s very common to be tired all the time, but that doesn’t mean that it’s normal.”
“Feeling tired all the time is your body’s way of communicating that something’s going on. Do something about it if you can.”
Being proactive about diet, lifestyle, and personalised health care can lead to more vibrant living.
