Another year is reaching its end, and many of us are feeling worn out and ready for a break.
Unfortunately, this exhaustion often coincides with a rush of deadlines, last-minute requests, and the juggling of holiday plans.
If you’re feeling tired, disengaged, and on the edge of burnout, you’re not alone. End of year burnout is a common challenge, but there are ways to manage it and regain your energy during the holiday season, setting yourself up for a fresh start in 2025.
Am I Experiencing Burnout?
Feeling tired, irritable, unmotivated, struggling to focus, or apathetic toward your work or responsibilities? Burnout doesn’t happen overnight; it’s the result of prolonged stress and overwork. Recognising and acknowledging these symptoms is the first step toward managing them.
How Can I Manage Burnout?
Prioritise Self Care
Amid the hustle, it’s easy to put self-care on the back burner, but this is when you need it most. Make time for activities that bring pleasure and help you slow down. Since burnout often stems from prolonged stress, focus on activities that signal to your body that you are safe and not under threat. Enjoy a walk outside, spend time reading or journaling, enjoy a favourite meal, go for a swim, book a massage, take a long bath, or indulge in an “everything shower” followed by your favourite face mask. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential.
Set Realistic Expectations
The holiday season often comes with high expectations: finding perfect gifts, maintaining a spotless home, crafting creative decorations, and attending endless social commitments. Instead of striving for perfection, focus on what’s truly important to you. It’s okay to delegate tasks, get external support (such as ordering take out or going to resturant!), say no to unnecessary obligations, and let go of the pressure to do it all.
Create Boundaries
Work-life balance can blur during this time of year, especially if your workload ramps up as the year ends. Set clear boundaries by establishing work hours and sticking to them. Communicate your limits with colleagues and loved ones, ensuring you have time to recharge.
Plan Restorative Activities
The holidays are an opportunity to reset and reconnect with yourself and loved ones. Plan activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as spending quality time with family, pursuing hobbies, or taking a walk outside.
Reflect and Reassess
As the year concludes, take time to reflect on your achievements and challenges. What worked well? What can you improve? Use this reflection to set realistic and meaningful goals for the year ahead, ensuring you prioritise balance and well-being.
Seek Support if Needed
If burnout symptoms persist or worsen, it may be time to seek professional help. Reaching out for help can be challenging, but it’s an important first step toward regaining balance and well-being.
By taking proactive steps to manage end of year burnout, you can embrace the holiday season with greater ease and begin the new year. Give yourself the gift of rest and restoration for 2025.
