What Shall We Do About Our Coffee Snobbery?

By: Sam Chan

What is “sin”? Jesus might explain this way – “You know how if you drink a single origin espresso you look down on the person drinking the instant coffee? Well … that’s sin.

In the bible, Jesus says sin is being confident of your own righteousness and looking down on others

It’s that smug feeling—when you have a green Eco shopping bag but the person next to you has plastic.

Jesus says that whenever we think we’re better than the person next to us, then that’s sin.

But we all do this! So what can we do?

Look to Jesus who died for us.

If we’re as good as we think we are, Jesus wouldn’t have to die for us. But he did. Because we’re not as good as we think we are.

But that’s OK.

Jesus isn’t looking for perfect people.

Jesus is looking for humble people.

Yes, the sort of person who drinks instant coffee in a foam cup, and says, “Lord have mercy on me.”

Luke 18:9-14
